Description
Hynautic KS-09 - Seal Kit for K-8 Cylinders (Prior to 4-15-94)
KS-09 is a genuine Hynautic cylinder seal kit for resealing K-8 steering cylinders built prior to 4-15-94. Use this kit to refresh internal sealing, help stop leaks at the rod gland, and restore smooth, consistent steering performance - provided the rod and bore are in good condition.
If you are unsure which K-8 version you have, or if your cylinder is a different K-8 variant (including HC5806 applications), see KS-18 or reach out via our Tech Support Page.
Compatibility
- Fits: Hynautic K-8 steering cylinders prior to 4-15-94
- How to confirm: Check cylinder stamping, tags, paperwork, or service history. If the date or model info is unclear, send photos to our Tech Support Page.
What’s Included
- Seal and O-ring set for one K-8 cylinder (as applicable)
- Rod wiper(s) and backup ring(s) (as applicable)
- Additional O-rings for glands/ports (as applicable)
Note: Exact contents can vary slightly by cylinder revision. Reuse of hard parts is expected unless damaged.
Installation Tips
- Protect the rod: Avoid nicks and tool marks. Even small damage can cause immediate leaks.
- Inspect before reseal: Pitting, scoring, or corrosion in the rod or bore can prevent a lasting repair.
- Keep it clean: Dirt in the gland area can cut new seals during assembly.
- Lubricate seals: Use a light film of the correct steering fluid during assembly - do not install seals dry.
- Bleed after service: Any air introduced during reassembly must be fully bled for consistent steering.
Maintenance Guidelines
- Inspect the rod and gland area periodically for fluid film, salt buildup, and corrosion.
- Keep bilges as dry as practical and rinse salt deposits around the cylinder when accessible.
- If steering feel changes (drift, pull, or frequent correction), verify fluid level and bleed the system before condemning components.
FAQs
Will KS-09 fix internal bypass?
Sometimes. If bypass is caused by worn internal seals and the rod and bore are in good condition, resealing can restore performance. If the bore is scored or corrosion is present, a rebuild is typically the better long-term fix.
How is KS-09 different from KS-18?
KS-09 is specifically for K-8 cylinders prior to 4-15-94. For other K-8 variants (including HC5806 applications), reference KS-18 or contact Tech Support with cylinder photos.
Do I need special tools?
Basic hand tools, soft jaws, and clean handling practices are typically sufficient. Use the proper procedure for your cylinder configuration and avoid damaging sealing surfaces.
Should I rebuild instead of reseal?
If the rod is pitted, the bore is scored, or the cylinder has chronic leakage or suspected wear, a rebuild is often the most reliable path.
