SeaStar HH6541-4 Classic Tilt 1.7 Hydraulic Boat Helm Pump

The Dometic SeaStar HH65414 Classic Tilt 1.7 Helm Pump is a front mount hydraulic helm with 1.7 cubic inches of displacement, a 3/4 standard tapered shaft, and a 48° classic tilt range for hydraulic steering systems. It offers smooth, efficient no feedback steering for inboard and outboard applications. Preloaded dual taper bearings ensure minimal excess free play. Shaft seals prevent water ingress. These helms are maintenance-free and fit most styled and formed dashes. Available for use with hydraulic systems only.

Dash / mounting footprint Front mount helm with a 4-1/2" dash cutout, 5.16" x 5.3" flange outline, and four 7/16" mounting holes on 4" centers.
Helm orientation The helm may be mounted with the shaft horizontal, vertical, or any angle in between, but the filler port must remain in the uppermost position.
Tilt mechanism Uses the classic tilt mechanism with five positive lock positions and a pre-loaded tapered bearing design for tighter feel and reduced excess free play.
Wheel / shaft hardware Accepts wheels up to 20". Steering wheel shaft nut torque is 150 in-lbs and should not exceed 200 in-lbs.
Ports / fitting style Current helms use ORB-style hose fitting ports. Use SeaStar ORB fittings only - do not install NPT pipe fittings into the helm.
Installation notes Confirm full wheel and dash clearance through all tilt positions, maintain access to the filler port, and inspect hoses and fittings regularly as part of normal steering system service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HH6541-3 and HH6541-4?
HH6541-4 is the updated current version. The -4 helm uses revised valve technology, more durable check valves, and an updated fill port design, while keeping the same 1.7 classic tilt helm format.
Does HH6541-4 replace HH5741 and keep the same steering feel?
Yes. HH6541-4 is the current replacement for HH5741 and earlier HH6541 versions. Because it remains a 1.7 cubic inch classic tilt helm, steering feel stays in the same general range, while exact turns lock-to-lock still depend on the cylinder volume in the system.
Does this helm include HF6004 fittings, and when would I need HF6012?
HH6541-4 is supplied with the HF6004 ORB elbow fitting kit. If you are adapting older or third-party fittings that do not match the current ORB connection style, HF6012 may be needed.
Can HH6541-4 be used with an autopilot?
It can be used in hydraulic systems that also include an autopilot, but the autopilot pump and plumbing still need to be sized and installed correctly for the steering cylinder volume and overall system layout.
Should I rebuild an older leaking helm or replace it?
If the old helm has contamination, corrosion, or internal rust, many owners end up replacing or professionally rebuilding it instead of attempting a basic seal refresh. If debris has circulated through the system, inspect and flush the rest of the steering system as well.
Why does air keep coming back into the system after bleeding?
Recurring air usually points to a leak, fitting issue, incorrect plug or fluid setup, or incomplete bleeding. Check the helm fittings, cylinder bleeders, plugs, and hose connections carefully, and make sure only the correct steering fluid is being used.
