3 Essentials for Upgrading to the NHK MEC KE System (and How to Pick the Right One)

If your boat still runs mechanical cables, hydraulic controls, or an older electronic setup, you’ve probably felt the common pain points: stiff lever feel, inconsistent response, and touchy low-speed control—especially when docking in wind/current or trying to hold a steady troll.

Upgrading to the NHK MEC KE system modernizes how your boat responds at idle and at the helm. It’s designed to make boating easier, smoother, and more predictable—the kind of improvement you notice every trip.

Why upgrade to NHK MEC KE instead of keeping your old controls?

Compared to mechanical/hydraulic/older electronic controls, KE upgrades are popular because they can deliver:

  • Smoother, lighter control feel (less effort, less fatigue)
  • More precise low-speed handling (better docking confidence)
  • Modern features and cleaner system integration (components designed to work together)

The 3 essentials (and why they improve boating)

1) KE Control Head

This is the part you touch every trip—and where older systems often show wear first (stiff travel, slop, inconsistency). A KE control head upgrade is all about confidence and repeatability at the helm, especially around docks.

Boating benefits:

  • Predictable response at idle and near-idle
  • Easier docking inputs with less over-correction
  • Cleaner, more modern helm experience

2) KE Handheld Remote (NM0906-00 / NM0907-00)

A handheld remote gives you control from the best spot, not just where the helm is. It’s especially useful for docking, single-operator boating, and low-speed positioning.

Boating benefits:

  • Better visibility and control while docking
  • Less running back and forth as a solo operator
  • Easier low-speed adjustments while fishing or positioning

3) KE Idle Switch (NJ0675-00)

The purpose of the NJ0675-00 idle switch is to allow the user to alter the idle RPM level of the boat engine.

How it works:

  • Place the KE+ control head lever in the idle position (F or R)
  • Press and hold the IDLE switch to gradually increase idle from the original idle point up to 20% of the max throttle zone for that engine
  • Pressing the SEL switch on the control head returns the engine to standard idle

Boat operators use this for engine warm-up on cold mornings, and as a practical form of trolling control on windy days (crab fishing, etc.).
